AWS picked the Port of Morrow because the site has high-speed Internet access, it's close to customers in the western U.S., and because of cost-effective infrastructure. The new data center is in an enterprise zone, which exempts the expensive computers that run data centers from property taxes. Amazon has two other data centers in the region -- an adjoining backup facility at the Port of Morrow and another modular backup at the Port of Umatilla. Port of Morrow officials say Amazon has enough land to build five more data centers at the main site.
